Professional Diploma in Perioperative Nursing Care

Course Description:

This course is designed to promote the knowledge and skills of professional nurses working in the perioperative areas particularly, in the operation theater. The course aims at maintaining a sterile surgical environment, preparing patients to surgical procedures, disinfecting surgical equipment, providing safe practices, and infection control. It is comprised of both theoretical and practical training; the theoretical part includes standard of care, surgical interventions and technologies, safe and sterile operational environment, and nurses’ roles such as a circulating nurse and a scrub nurse. The practical part provides the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in theory in the operating room to include, disinfecting surgical equipment, scrubbing technique, and participating in operations with different surgical interventions such as general surgery, open heart surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, and ophthalmic surgery.

Number of contact hours:

The total theoretical and practicum hours are 450 hours, extended over a nine month period.

  • Theory: 150 hours (8 hours per week, 32 hours per month) for 5 months.
  • Clinical: 300 hours; 38 shifts (8 hours per week, 32 hours per month) for 9 months.
